Why I’m adding running to my current workouts

As you know, I love yoga. It calms and grounds me. But every now and then, I like to add some power to my workouts. I also like to spend as much time outdoors as possibly can. And that’s why I’m adding running to my current workouts. These are the reasons I like to go for a run.

Running can be done outdoors

Even in autumn, when it’s cold, you can go running. The running itself will make your body warm again. The fresh air really energizes you and it’s lovely to run in a park and enjoy the beautiful nature.

It makes us happier

If you like to exercise, you know: working out will almost always make you feel better. And you’ve probably heard of the famous Runners High—that rush of feel-good hormones known as endocannabinoids. In a May 2013 study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise in which rats and mice got antidepressant-like effects from running on a wheel, researchers concluded that physical activity was an effective alternative to treating depression. Isn’t that interesting? It get’s better! A 2012 study in the Journal of Adolescent Health proved that just 30 minutes of running during the week for three weeks boosted sleep quality, mood, and concentration during the day.

It could lower inflammation

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery published a review of data in Januari of 2018 on the rates of arthritis joint pain experienced by marathoners versus the greater population. They looked at 675 regular runners from 31 countries throughout the course of 20 years. The authors found arthritis prevalence was less than half for distance runners — smaller than 9% for runners versus 18% for non-runners, according to MapMyRun.com. Also, barring runners with hip or knee issues, the authors found no link between distance running and joint pain. So there goes the whole ‘running is bad for your knees’-argument!

It’s a form of cardio

Personal Trainers always advise me to add cardio to my workouts, since it’s good for my body. One of the best parts about running is that it’s a versatile form of cardio. Running will get your heart pumping, whether you go for a quick run in the park, an interval training or a long distance run. It’s a great way to burn calories and you don’t need much for it.

You can run together

I prefer meeting up with people and simultaneously doing something fun. Like a yoga class. But I also like to go running together with friends, because then you can actually chat also (yoga classes are mostly silent). That way, you workout and catch up with your friends!

The right shoes

Note: when you start running as a workout, it’s important to wear the right shoes. They should give support and be the right size. I prefer running shoes that I can wear without socks and that are animal friendly. Like these Adidas Pure Boost shoes, who are vegan (I’m told) and super comfortable.
