My 5 favorite ways to unfasten myself

When you’re a hard working busy bee, it’s super beneficial to sometimes stop what you’re doing and just unfasten. To rewind. To take a step back or to let everything go. Did you know: 17% of adults in the US would turn to a counseling center for help in case of burnout as of 2017? And 14% of Dutch employees had a burn out in 2017? Unwinding, relaxing and unfastening seems to be difficult and lots of people don’t know how they should relax. Here are my 5 favorite ways to unfasten myself.

Go dancing

Whether it’s in a club with my friends or on my own in the living room: dancing to music can release so much stress or even negative emotions. And I’m not talking about following certain steps or practicing a routine, but putting on your favorite dance music and just letting go. And be sure to wear something comfortable while you unfasten yourself. In a controlled study in the Journal of Applied Gerontology, researchers found that partner dance and musical accompaniment can help bring about stress reliefDance was also found to increase life satisfaction, according to a 2008 study in the American Journal of Health Education.

Meditate

A huge to do list, lots of responsibilities, heavy news headlines: there’s a lot for us to process. Quieting the mind every now is something that’s really helpful for me. My favorite form of meditation is guided meditation (there are lots to be found on youtube) – wearing a comfortable yoga pants and a soft sloggi bra. It silences my mind and allows me to reflect.

Be creative

Let out that inner child! What is you loved to do when you were a kid? Did you paint, sing, dance, play music or climb walls? Start doing that again. And don’t focus to much on the outcome, focus on the process. Let it all go!

Be in nature

Unfasten yourself in nature. Go for a walk in a forest, a park or on the beach. Preferably bare foot, to really be in touch with nature. A study in Japan discovered that walking in a forest environment reduced levels of cortisol, the hormone associated with stress, as well as reducing pulse rate and blood pressure. I also love how surfing and being in the ocean makes me forget everything around me. It’s just my friends and me in the water. Nothing else.

Travel

Being in a different environment can be really good to unfasten. Not just because, usually when you’re on a holiday, there’s a lot less stress, but also because of the new experience. For me, traveling through countries that are completely different than the country I live in really place things in perspective. The things I worry about, the things that I focus on; they all become less big when I travel.
